Q 80: What promise does the Lord hold out in the fourth commandment?

A 80: In exchange for obedience to the fourth commandment, the Lord promises to bless and sanctify His people to Him forever. (Ex. 20.8-11; Deut. 5.12-15)

The blessing of God consists primarily in our intimacy with Him. In worship, as we truly participate in the Lord, we enter into His glory and know Him, through Jesus Christ, as He is. Here we experience fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore, such as we can in no way obtain from anything or anyone else (Ps. 16.11). The effect of such participating in the Lord is that the Spirit of God sets us free from the restraints of sin and unbelief and transforms us increasingly into the very image of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that we are able to live, from glory to glory, for the sake of the Lord and His Kingdom (2 Cor. 3.12-18).
