Justice and the Seventh Commandment

A Kingdom Catechism

God’s people must take seriously their duty in this matter.

Q 106: How do the redeemed of the Lord enforce God’s justice against all adultery?

A 106: The redeemed of the Lord enforce God’s justice against adultery by practicing modesty and chastity, reserving sexual relations for marriage, disciplining all sexual offenses, and regulating divorce according to the teaching of God’s Word. (Lev. 18.6-18; Heb.13.4; 1 Cor. 5; Matt. 19.1-9; 1 Cor. 7.12-15)

We see the consequences in our own day of a lax attitude toward sexual sin: broken homes, abused spouses and children, the aborting of millions of unwanted children, a high divorce rate, a blight of pornography, sexually transmitted disease. Pop culture is not to blame for our nation’s addiction to sex. It has only loosed and abetted the hearts of people who long ago preferred to leave behind the moral teachings of the Law of God. There may be no putting these ills back into the Pandora’s box from which they emerged; nevertheless, the people of God, who know and love their Lord and their neighbors, must take seriously their duty to exercise discipline in this area of human life.
