The Basis for the Tenth Commandment

A Kingdom Catechism

God alone is Lord.

Q 128: What is the basis for the tenth commandment?

A 128: The basis for the tenth commandment is that God is Lord over all created things, and dispenses them according to His good pleasure, and that He alone is sufficient for all our needs. (Ps. 24.1; Eph. 1.11; Matt. 6.32; Phil. 4.19)

By coveting things not our own we presume to judge the Lord for the way in which He has distributed His gifts among men. We allow unlawful longings and desires to displace contentedness and thanksgiving, so the we love ourselves rather than God. And we look with resentment on our neighbor, loving our own interests more than his. All sins grow from covetousness, for when we covet, we make ourselves, not God, the final bar of appeal in all matters of truth, justice, and love.
