Biblical Worldview: Disciplines

Foundations of a Worldview

Proverbs 3.5, 6

5Trust in the LORDwith all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding.

6In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

The Biblical worldview is grounded in a vision of spiritual realities, beginning in God and in the various ways God has, in time, made Himself and His will known.

The good life consists in knowing God and His presence with us (Ps. 16.11). But, as in every worldview, we must take up the disciplines that will allow and enable us to realize this most desirable end.

Realizing the worldview revealed in Scripture requires a disciplined approach to seeking the Lord and discovering His will. Such discipline begins in the soul; is worked out in active pursuit of the Lord, using means which He prescribes for all our relationships, roles, and responsibilities; and is brought to completion in us by the Lord’s own direct intervention in our lives for our good and His glory. Through the disciplines of the Lord we learn to fear and love Him and to walk in all His ways.

These disciplines are of various sorts and are designed to help us make the best use of the time God gives us for knowing and enjoying Him. As we might expect, the disciplines involved in pursuing the unseen things of God and His will seem strange or unprofitable to those who are committed to a worldview that does not have God as its ultimate good.

But this should not deter us from taking up these disciplines with great energy and anticipation. We need to learn these disciplines and to practice them faithfully if we are to enjoy the benefits of knowing, serving, and glorifying God in all our lives.

Act: What do you understand as the most important disciplines for making progress toward the spiritual vision of God, His Kingdom, and His promises?
