The First Commandment

The Law of God for Daily Meditation

Morning Meditation:
Exodus 20.1-3
1And God spoke all these words, saying: 2“I am the LORDyour God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3You shall have no other gods before Me.” Exodus 20.1-3

Which comes first, salvation or keeping the Law? Why should I keep God’s Law, if not to save me? How bleak were things, and how great was the bondage I experienced in my Egypt? How glorious was the day when the Lord birthed me into His Kingdom of Light? None of the “gods” I worshiped before knowing the Lord ever did so much for me: How can I not love my Redeemer and Savior exclusively and always?

Evening Meditation:
Deuteronomy 5.4-7
4“The LORD talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. 5I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said: 6‘I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 7You shall have no other gods before Me.’”

What evidence did I see this day of the Lord’s ongoing, steadfast love for me? What evidence did I observe of the feebleness and folly of the gods of this world? Do I fear God as He deserves? And, at the same time, do I love Him because of Who He is and what He has done? What thanks can I give Him now? What resolution concerning tomorrow am I willing to make?
