Honor and Order

The Law of God for Daily Meditation

Morning Meditation
Leviticus 19.3

“Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father…”

Exodus 21.17

“And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.”

Leviticus 20.9

“For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall beupon him.”

What can I do today to honor my parents? What about my “parents” in the faith, those who lead our church, or who have gone before me in the Lord, and made it possible for me to know Him?

Evening Meditation
Deuteronomy 21.18-21

18“If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, 19then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city. 20And they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear.”

Exodus 21.15

“And he who strikes his father or his mother shall be put to death.”

These penalties were harsh, but they were for a time when the Spirit was not continuously present and lapsing into lawlessness was everybody’s favorite pastime. But what do such penalties teach me about the holiness of God? The seriousness with which He regards His commandments? The order He has built into human society? Do I need to confess and repent of anything from today?
