The New Molechs

The Second Commandment: Statutes and Precepts (11)

Leviticus 18.21

“And you shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.”

Leviticus 20.1-5

1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Again, you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘Whoever of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who gives any of his descendants to Molech, he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones. I will set My face against that man, and will cut him off from his people, because he has given some of his descendants to Molech, to defile My sanctuary and profane My holy name. And if the people of the land should in any way hide their eyes from the man, when he gives some of his descendants to Molech, and they do not kill him, then I will set My face against that man and against his family; and I will cut him off from his people, and all who prostitute themselves with him to commit harlotry with Molech.”

In Molech worship children were burned in fire by their parents in order to appease the false deity. Let’s read that another way: In order to be at ease, with a minimum of inconvenience or want, parents gave up their children in sacrifice to a false god. Is abortion a kind of Molech worship? Are those parents who let their children do whatever they want, have whatever they want, hang with whomever they want, and indulge in pop culture and social networking without any supervision or restraints – are such parents, in order to keep peace at home, simply giving their children over to a new Molech in our day?

It’s hard to see how we can be training our children to delight in the Lord and to find in Him the fullness of joy when we allow them to fill their lives with so many other diversions and things designed to make them happy according to the standards of this unbelieving age. It may be “easier” for parents just to “go with the flow” and “hope for the best.” But doing so is closer to sacrificing their children to Molech than devoting them to the knowledge and service of the living God.

The secular “god of convenience/happiness/tolerance” has no place in the worship of the one true God.
