The Fourth Commandment: Statutes and Precepts (11)

Exodus 34.22-24

22 “And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end. 23 Three times in the year all your men shall appear before the LORD, the LORD God of Israel. 24 For I will cast out the nations before you and enlarge your borders; neither will any man covet your land when you go up to appear before the LORD your God three times in the year.”

How serious was the Lord about these feasts? Israel’s continued wellbeing in the land depended as much on her faithful observance of these feasts as on her obedience to the moral, civil, and spiritual aspects of the Law. Keeping these feast days holy – both in form and participation – was to be a high priority for the people of God.

If we are to have feasts and holy days as the followers of Christ – and I believe we should – then we must keep them holy just as we do the Lord’s Day. The wellbeing of our nation could be at stake.

The Law of God is the soil which, fertilized by the rest of God’s Word and watered by His Spirit, brings forth the fruit of Christian life. If you’d like to understand this process better, and how to make best use of the Law in your walk with and work for the Lord, order the book, The Ground for Christian Ethics, from our online store.
