What Now?

What will Americans find to talk about now?

The election is finally over and the votes are being tallied. What will Americans find to talk about now?

I'd like to think that our conversations will turn to other and perhaps more edifying topics. But what would those be? And do we think for a moment that the media and politicians will allow us to think that anything matters more in American life than politics? As if.

As a people we have slipped into a mindset and worldview which holds that politics is the answer to all our ills. Every couple of years we have a major election, and the time in between those is filled with politicians jockeying for favor, pundits skewering for ratings, and the rest of us soaking it all in in preparation for the next round of elections.

If there ever was a common weal in America it was long ago hijacked by politicians and special interests in order to further their own agendas and feather their own nests - which is approximately the same thing. And we're in on that, too. Politicians know what we're after - the same thing they're after: as much as we can get with as little sacrifice as possible. The national motto of the common weal is "Every man for himself!"

Politics won't change this situation. It takes something much more penetrating and powerful to cause us to stop thinking only about ourselves and to be willing to sacrifice self-interest for the greater good. This is the work of revival, and revival is the work of God.

If you aren't yet praying for revival on a regular basis, we invite you to consider joining us by conference call, the third Thursday night of each month, at 9:00 Eastern. Or if you'd like information and resources on how to start a revival prayer group of your own, just let me know. I'll be happy to send something along.

We can't do without politics (sigh), at least, not in this fallen world. But we can do more than politics can if we will devote ourselves to seeking the Lord for revival, renewal, and awakening - in ourselves, our churches, our nation, and the world.

Now that's something to talk about.
