Psalm 5

September 02, 2022

Psalm 5, NKJV
To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David. Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray.

O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me. For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue. Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against you.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.

Psalm 5, JN paraphrase
David’s instructions to the choirmaster regarding the flutes. They are to be used to express his groanings, his cries for attention, his prayers to the Almighty.

David’s day, and mine should, begin with prayer, sacrifice and watchful planning of the day in response to the LORD’s leading. He was directed, and so am I, to strip every evidence of evil from my day and responsibilities.

Easier said than done—unless I rely on the abundance of Your steadfast love. Your love lays out the path before me. It enables me to identify the lies, the suicidal, the flatterers, those whose life centers on evil rather than You. It is Your love that leads me to appropriate responses.

I need your guidance in helping/leading others to rejoice and sing for joy, to an understanding of the shield of protection over them. And to an understanding of how that shield frees them from the chains of the past.

Morning Psalm 18, Noon Psalm 119:145-152, Evening Psalm 99.. If you follow this regimen, you will pray through the Psalms every 47 days or just under 8 times per year.

An alternate Reading Plan is based on 7 chapters/day from 7 sections of the Scriptures. My groupings are: Genesis-Joshua, Judges to Esther, Job to Song of Solomon, Psalms breaking 119 into convenient sets, Isaiah to Malachi, Matthew to Acts, Romans to Revelation. This plan, over a several year period will result in an average reading of the entire Bible in slightly over twice per year. I've been following this plan since 1989 and still find the mixture of Scriptures presented each day to be a delightful way to end my day. The NLB app has a scheduling tool that assists greatly in keeping track of the reading list.

Psalm 4

September 01, 2022

Psalm 4, NKJV
To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah

But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah

Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!” You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4, JN paraphrase
LORD of my righteousness, where are You? Why are You not answering me? Is this suddenly a reversal of our former relationship? Please hear my prayer! Has my honor been turned to shame? Have You suddenly developed a love of flattery and started to chase lies?

No! You still reserve a special relationship with those who are faithful to You and Your Word. For those who maintain a faithful relationship with You and Your Word. For those who spend their nighttime hours pondering You and Your love for us. For You, O LORD, are the One, the only One who can provide safety for me.

Your guidance to me is to offer proper sacrifices to You and put my trust solidly in You. Not those charlatans begging for some “good.” LORD, but those who put their trust in You and offer sacrifices that are sweet in Your nostrils. Than, only then will I lie down in peace and sleep.

Psalm 3

August 31, 2022

Psalm 3, NKJV
A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son. O LORD, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, “There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah
But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the LORD, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah
I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Arise, O LORD! Save me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked. Salvation belongs to the LORD; your blessing be on your people! Selah.

Psalm 3. JN paraphrase
I can’t begin to imagine what it would be like to flee from the wrath of a son. Let alone one who had deliberately and maliciously attempted to incite the nation against me.

But I must take David’s example before me as he recognized the hand of the LORD, God, the Almighty in providing for his well-being. What could be better than the LORD watching over me from His holy hill?

How many nights have I wasted, laying in my bed, fussing over a problem that is totally beyond my power to resolve, rather than taking David’s example. He laid down, he slept while turning that entire situation to the LORD, with a few suggestions on how he would like restitution to happen.

Psalm 1

August 30, 2022

Psalm 1, NKJV
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalm 1. JN paraphrase
LORD, I have two choices; either to walk in the counsel of the ungodly or find delight in Your Law. The More I dream about living in the conjunction of Your Law and my life, the more I realize the munificence of your offer.

LORD, lead me in the Way of Your Law; lead me in the Way of Righteousness for Your Name’s sake.

Psalm 119

June 19, 2022

Besides being the longest chapter in the Bible, Psalm 119 is distinct in other ways. Except for the first three verses, Psalm 119 is entirely a prayer. In it the anonymous psalmist pours out his heart in longing to know God’s Word and to gain the benefits it affords. Psalm 119 is an abecedarian psalm, as we will explain, and this makes it a long and beautiful poem as well.
