Genesis 6:1-3

June 14, 2022

When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.

An important distinction as God imposes a differentiation between the Holy Spirit and man, a limitation upon the life of man of 120 years. (From The Guinness Book of World Records “The oldest living person, Jeanne Calment of France, was 122 when she died in 1997; currently, the world’s oldest person is 118-year-old Kane Tanaka of Japan.”

One of the highly influential books in my preteen childhood was a series of Bible stories, “Line upon Line. Mom read them to us, probably at nap times until we began to read on our own. I’m sure, a major factor in my learning to read preschool.

A word search in E-Sword revealed about 330 references to the Spirit which I will examine in a Line upon Line manner, searching particularly for those verses that indicate something about our relationship with the Holy Spirit or its place in the Godhead.

A hope is that this study will invoke/provoke a spirit of commentary among the reader of this column. Please post your remarks to “Voices Together” Inappropriate remarks will be deleted.

Genesis 1:2 (ESV)
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

What I see here is the preexistence of the Spirit member of the Godhead before the earth began to take form. I expect that later on, the Godhead will be defined as the Triune God. The important point is that the Holy Spirit was a member of the Godhead from eternity. God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit.

Jumping ahead, or back as the case may be, let’s go back to the beginning of the Church on the Day of Pentecost.

Acts 2:6-11
And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians— we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

There is the primary key to the gift of tongues—so that the Gospel could be spread to every people, tongue, and nation. Think of the confusion without this gift, of the veritable standstill in the spread of the Gospel. As it was, the Gospel was spread like an out of control grass-fire to every tongue and nation.

Yes we will look at other gospels later for other things that resulted from this gift, but we have the major benefit in this brief 6 verse passage.

Psalm 119:65-72

June 12, 2022

Teth You have dealt well with your servant, O LORD, according to your word Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments. Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word. You are good and do good; teach me your statutes. The insolent smear me with lies, but with my whole heart I keep your precepts; their heart is unfeeling like fat, but I delight in your law.It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Ish Elohim continues to revel in the benefits of obedience to the Word of God. Good judgment, knowledge, obedience to the Word, delight in the Law, riches far in excess than thousands of pieces of gold and silver. The point is, the example he sets is that the benefits are immense beyond measure or expectations. It reminds be of a recent conversation regarding the benefits of grafting where the strengths of the root stock are transferred to the new fruit. See what Ish Elohim received from his “grafting” into the Word of God.

Acts 19:1-7

June 11, 2022

And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John's baptism. And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. There were about twelve men in all.

Up and running again, LORD willing, after dealing with a couple of technical difficulties and waiting upon the LORD for assurance that I am off in the right track. In short, I am proposing to examine the Scriptures for a better understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit. My position is that the LORD, working through the Holy Spirit led me to the solution of the main technical challenge. I laid that out as a fleece a day or two ago and the solution presented this afternoon (6/10).

I assume that on that July, 1951 Lord’s Day, that I was baptized by Brother Larson in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost but I don’t remember. Many other aspects of that day are still relatively vivid, 71 years later. A hot humid day, a brand new stock tank borrowed for the event, my parents, brothers and sister and the other members of those gathered to the Name of the LORD in Knoxville, IL. But I don’t remember the most important aspects of that moment.

So join me on my search. The answer is in the Word of God.

Acts 10:44-48

June 08, 2022

“Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message. The Jewish leaders who came with Peter were amazed that the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
The Peter asked, ‘Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?’ So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.”

And what did the assembled Gentiles hear? The answer is clearly given in Acts 2:5-12:

“Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And  at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And  they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking  Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and  Medes and  Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and   proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And  all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

Brothers, what does that mean for today? In short, each of us must demand that our churches proclaim the true significance of Pentecost. The Gift of the Holy Spirit was not the pouring out of an unintelligible drivel but the mighty message that “Jesus save, we have heard the joyful sound, Jesus saves” to every tribe and people and tongue. It is a call to the mission fields.

Acts 1:4-5
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Acts 2:1-13, 21
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Yesterday, as I write this, was the Day of Pentecost. Recognition of the day promised by our LORD that would bestow the gift of the Holy Spirit upon His people. Recognition of the day promised to fulfill presence of the Triune God among His people. We met as we normally do, for a morning of worship. There was only one mention that this was Pentecost in the 2 out of three services I attended; and that was strictly a comment in passing.

THE DAY THAT THE LORD, GOD, THE ALMIGHTY CAME TO LIVE AND BE AMONG HIS PEOPLE. Why? So that we may tell others in their own tongues of the mighty works of God. So that everyone who calls upon the name of the LORD shall be saved.

3000 were saved that day in Jerusalem. How many were saved in a small village in Vermont this last LORD’s Day?

Psalm 135:3

June 06, 2022

Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing to his name, for it is pleasant!

A lot of thinking and prayer is the last few days have not produced a significant degree of writing. There has been a considerable body of research, but I have not found any verse that more concisely pins down the answer to the Question, “Why is praise of the LORD, God, the Almighty so significant in our relationship with Him?” Why does Psalm 150 with its emphasis on praise play a preeminent role in defining our worship?

I find no better directive than Psalm 135:3a, “Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing to his name,” He is good: perfect, without flaw, an exemplar of all that is beyond improvement. Praise Him.

Voices Together will continue but not on a daily basis. LORD, willing, I will continue the LORD’s Day series on Psalm 119. However, I need to do a fairly extensive body of research regarding the more extensive question regarding our worship of the LORD.

"Praise, Lord"

June 03, 2022

My initial thought was to do an occurrence by occurrence commentary on ‘praise’, writing a deep and profound analysis on each occurrence. I can hear the snickers all the way from Washington State. Then I thought of grouping the occurrences by some commonality of object. Aha, that began to work as soon as I realized that there is only one commonality. EVERYTHING! We are called to praise the LORD, God, the Almighty in everything. Everything we do, say, think, Everything! Every instance of our life must be to glorify and praise Him.

Now that does lead me to another observation. “Praise, Lord” occurs in 82 verses, 207 times in the entire Scripture. Compare that to the 111 verses in the Psalms that contain 134 directions to praise the LORD. I believe this is a very strong indicator of the Pslams are where we need to go for instructions regarding how the LORD, God, the Almighty wants to be worshiped.

Psalm 6:5 - Praise

June 02, 2022

I concluded, a few days ago that the verb, praise, may easily be the most important verb in the Psalms when I describe the Psalms as the LORD-God-Almighty’s “Handbook for Worship.” The first step was to write a meditation, or prayer, based on each Psalms. That step begun in February 2021, was completed on June 2, 2022. Now the task of finishing the theses is beginning.

Clue 1 Psalm 150, in the place of honor as the summary of this precious book, leaves no doubt. The verb, “praise” occurs 13 time in 7 very short verses with only 72 words in the ESV. That’s one instruction to praise the LORD, God, the Almighty every 5.5 words. That’s focused.

I get it, LORD. The Key to Worship is to praise You. So I’m starting with an analysis of the usage of “praise” in the Psalms. (My apology, there is no known antidote for a statistician including a lapse of 40+ years since attempting a career.) Briefly, the usage statistics for “praise” in the 42 Psalms where it occurs is that the word is included 134 times in 111 verses. It does not seem all that significant until you begin to introduce a bit of perspective. Think that almost a third of the Psalms deal with praise. Those 134 occurrences are spread through 2461 verses. Only 1 in 18 verses in the Psalms contains the word “praise”, which seems pretty sparse, but time will tell as we get further into this study.

Psalm 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise?

This certainly starts our study in a no holds barred style: Sheol is a place without praise of the LORD, God, the Almighty. And where is Sheol? Current thought is that Sheol (in some translations—the grave) is a midway point between death and Heaven or death and Hell. So be it, but there will be no praise of God there.

Psalm 150 (Part 2)

June 01, 2022

(Yes, I am repeating a portion of yesterday’s column for a purpose. Stick with me.)

Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

Psalm 150 Something I did not dream of typing when I started this project in February 2021, A project to write at least one meditation, or prayer using each of the 150 Psalms as a basis. One last mediation and its ----30----

But it is not, the original goal had two steps. The second step was to go through all the meditations step by step as I extracted the wisdom that the LORD, God, the Almighty had shared with His people about how He wants to be worshiped.

This is an AWESOME task. But also Psalm 150 is an AWESOME place to begin. Read it. Read it again --NO, it is not the end. Maybe just slightly beyond the beginning. Late last night a dear brother and I spent a very stimulating hour examining what I had written so far and came to the end; that I had barely scratched the surface. This morning I am thankful for my brother’s insight and at times, forcefully offered comments.

I think that the conclusion we settled on last night is that Psalm 150 is a beginning, not the conclusion. The LORD, God, the Almighty is giving us very specific instructions regarding our attitude as we approach Him in worship. What’s my clue? The verb ‘praise’ is used 13 times in this ESV translation. Not too hard to figure, 7 sentences, 13 verbs

So the next step is search the Psalms for other sentences where ‘praise’ is predominant.

30 is a long ways off. and again. Let it’s completeness soak into your soul and heart. Look at that last line. Do you have breath—praise the LORD! Does a cymbal have breath? No, but you do!

Psalm 149:3-9

May 30, 2022

Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre! For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands, to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron to execute on them the judgment written! This is honor for all his godly ones. Praise the LORD!

This is indeed a Psalm of praise. Without a doubt A roiling, boiling over Paean of Praise to the LORD, God, the Almighty. Where are the like Psalms as we join for worship on LORD’S DAY MORNING Or our Wednesday evening prayer meetings?
