Words of Life - "Wonderful Words of Life"

Jesus speaks the words of life

T. M. Moore, the Principal of The Fellowship of Ailbe, has made this assessment of how people think and live today. “Three gods in particular rule the aspirations of our generation: Self, Happiness, and the ‘meaner’ deities of experience, possessions and positions. This worldview is as much a form of religion as the Christian faith.”

Contrast that with the worldview of King David recorded in Psalm 29. He looked at all the world around him and saw the glory and power of God, and heard the voice of God, everywhere.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
Psalm 29:3-4 NRSV

19th century Christian hymnwriter Philip P. Bliss understood the power and importance of hearing the voice of God, particularly through the Scriptures. As a musician and a Christian, Bliss used his music to convey Gospel truth, to share the beauty and the message of the Bible. His hymn, Wonderful Words of Life, is a testament to the beauty, the value, and the power of the words – and Word – of God.

Sing them over again to me - wonderful words of life
Let me more of their beauty see - wonderful words of life
Words of life and beauty, teach me faith and duty

The apostle John writes about a time when many who were following Jesus began to turn away because they found his teaching difficult to understand. As this was happening, John records, Jesus asked the twelve who were closest to him, “Do you also wish to go away?” To which Simon Peter replied:

“Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
John 6:68 NRSV

Yes, the words of Scripture are wonderful and beautiful, and they teach us how to live as followers of Jesus. But this is because they are words of truth from the very source of truth – the Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ the blessed One gives to all wonderful words of life
Sinner list to the loving call - wonderful words of life
All so freely given. wooing us to Heaven

The life-giving words of Jesus, and all of Scripture, show us the way to eternal life through faith in what the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus accomplished for us. This is the “Gospel;” the message of salvation in Jesus. Through the Scriptures, God calls on all people everywhere to believe the Gospel, and he calls on those of us who know Jesus to proclaim that message to others.

Sweetly echo the gospel call - wonderful words of life
Offer pardon and peace to all - wonderful words of life
Jesus only Savior, sanctify forever

There is a choice placed before every person of every age: follow the wrong think and wrong belief of selfish materialistic pursuits, which end in eternal death, or acknowledge the sovereignty and power of the God of creation who offers “wonderful words of life” through the Lord Jesus Christ. Today, hear the loving words of the Savior who offers “pardon and peace to all.”

Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life
Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life
