This time won’t be like before?

Train of Thought
The Week December 31 - January 6, 2013

The arrival of every New Year provokes us to thoughts about time and what we plan to do with it.

Time is, next to salvation, God’s most precious gift. At the end of time – at least, of our time – death awaits us all. The challenge is to use our time, and each new day of our lives, for the greatest possible advantage.

For the Christian, this means redeeming our time to live in the wisdom of God. The believer will use each reminder of time’s preciousness to double down for a disciplined life of learning, growing, and living for Christ and His Kingdom. If we heed the hunger in our souls, which cry out for the Lord, we will have no problem committing ourselves to greater focus and effort in seeking Him.

Might this be the year we rediscover the Lord’s Day and why it matters so much to God? Or might we become more attentive and receptive as our pastors unpack the mysteries of our salvation? Will we take steps to strengthen our families against the ever-encroaching culture and state? Will we improve in our ability to resist the devil and to follow the Spirit’s leading in our daily lives?

Only time will tell. But before this New Year slips through our fingers as suddenly as the last, we should take some time to reflect anew on God’s purposes, promise, and power for making all things new.

And then we should resolve to live this New Year as though seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness was, indeed, the driving force of all our lives.

This Time

This time you really mean it. It will all
work out, you’re sure. This time won’t be like last
time, or like all those other times, long past.
This time you’ve got the details, great and small,
in proper order, and you’re ready. This
time, well, you’ll see, some things will change. You just,
you simply must believe, you’ve got to trust
it will be so. This time it just can’t miss.

But you’re still you, the same old person who,
so many times before, resolved and swore
and promised – to yourself and others – you
would change, would get it done, and never more
would let yourself – and others – down. You’ll do
it this time. This time won’t be like before?
