Performing God's Love

What would we do if God did not love us like this?

We love because he first loved us.

  - 1 John 4.19

You have nothing more precious/than the love of God, if you perform it...

  - Oengus mac Oengobann, Feilire Oengusso (Irish, 9th century)

Don't miss the conditional clause at the end of this quote.

God loves us more than we will ever know. He loved us before we could or did know Him. He loved us when we were His enemies. He loves us when we're not thinking of Him. He loves us when we're disobeying Him. He loves us in every detail, at every moment, without faltering or failing. He loves us purely, deeply, personally, and eternally. He loves us when no one else does, and even when we do not love ourselves.

If you do not know God's love like this, then what do you know of Him at all?

No wonder Oengus believed that the love of God was so precious! What would we do if God did not love us like this? We would simple cease to be! We would perish! Imagine yourself in a situation where you cannot get your breath. Air seems quite precious at such a time, no? But the love God has for us is more precious even than this.

But you say that, while you acknowledge this to be true, you do not consistently experience this precious love of God?

Perhaps if you performed His love more consistently, you would?

God loves us, so that we might be able to love with His love. As we love with His love we depend on affections which are not natural to us, which flow down to us from on high, which capture our souls and bodies and put them to use in advancing a Kingdom not of this world. All we have to do is incline ourselves to love, take the first step, initiate the gesture. God will fill us and take it from there.

Then, as you perform the love of God - as the eternal God Who loves you beyond imagining or understanding begins to flow His love through you to another - then you will know just how very, very precious this love of God truly is.

You have nothing - nothing! - more precious than this love of God.

If you perform it.
