Mentally Out of Touch

We're not thinking about the world Christianly.

The Christian Mind

And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. Hebrews 5.9-11

The Christian Mind
Harry Blamires (1916-)
“There is no Christian dialogue in which the issues are being thrashed out that disturb the rebellious artist and the rebellious prophet. Thus the thinking Christian who is concerned over these issues finds himself fitfully and perversely at one with fiercely – and even blasphemously – non-Christian writers and, at the same time, mentally out of touch with his fellow-Christians.”

What are the pressing issues of your community? The issues, situations, or conditions that bring misery, fear, or disappointment to your neighbors? Joblessness? Homelessness? Drug and sexual abuse? Failing schools? Income gap? Infrastructure erosion? Infusion of immigrants? Gangs? And where are the Christians who are meeting to discuss such issues from the perspective of Christ exalted in glory and His Spirit invigorating His Church by His Word? Where are the Christian solutions to issues of culture, morality, the environment, and a multitude of other questions? Since no Christian minds are dialoging on these issues at the level where all believers can become engaged, we are left with no option but to latch on to whichever political aspirant seems most likely to act in a manner consistent with our concerns. We are mentally out of touch with the mind of Christ, and so the Church is mentally out of touch with the great issues and opportunities of the day. Men and brethren, these things ought not be.

What might your church do to foster Christian conversation over the pressing issues of your community?

Kingdom Vision
Two books can help you begin to strengthen your vision of Christ and His Kingdom. Order a copy of The Kingship of Jesus (click here) to grow in your understanding of what in the world Jesus is doing as He sits at the Father’s right hand. And what He’s doing is bringing His Kingdom to earth as it is in heaven, which is the subject of The Kingdom Turn (click here). Let these two books challenge your vision of what Christ can do as He makes disciples and builds His Church.

Renewing the Mind
We are currently running a multi-part series on Renewing the Mind in our daily ReVision series. The first installment is entitled, The Mind of Christ, and is available as a free PDF download by clicking here. I urge you to follow this entire series. If you are not subscribed to ReVision, you can do so at the website. Or you can download each week’s PDF study in a format suitable for group or personal use.
