Your Little Light

Is the light of Jesus shining through us?

Personal Mission Field

The light shines in the darkness. All humanity, by virtue of original sin, was in darkness - not darkness of the outer eyes that sense the forms and colors of sensible things, but darkness of the inner eyes that discern the kinds and beauties of intelligible things...Born of a virgin, the light shines in darkness - that is to say, in the hearts of those who know it.

  - Eriugena, Homily on John 1.1-14 (Irish, 9th century)

...the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.

  - 1 John 2.8

"This little light of mine - I'm gonna let it shine." Simple, childlike, almost trite, certainly not up to the quality of what passes for contemporary worship rock today.

But this little song captures a big truth. Easy to sing, it's evidently much harder for the followers of Christ to live. The evangelical Church in America today has become manifestly unevangelistic. Commanded to take the Gospel to the world, we've become comfortable with waiting for the world to find its way to us.

The light of Jesus shines in the world of darkness, sin, and unbelief only through the lives and witness of those who practice the commitment vocalized in this simple refrain. What about us? Is the light of Jesus shining through us? Are we shining His light on others, or does our reticence about Jesus and His Kingdom effectively shield our friends, neighbors, and co-laborers from the only Light that can show them the way to life?

Will you begin to pray about your little light? Will you pray daily for more light to shine - more of Jesus to know and glow through you? Will you pray for boldness to engage others in conversations about Jesus, as, indeed, we all have been called to do? Will you pray for alertness to every open door of opportunity? Will you pray that God will prepare the hearts of the people in your Personal Mission Field so that they'll welcome your overtures and questions?

Will you shine your light or hide it? Well?
