Psalm 129:1-8

March 24, 2022

A Song of Ascents. “Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth”— let Israel now say—“Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed against me. The plowers plowed upon my back; they made long their furrows.” The LORD is righteous; he has cut the cords of the wicked. May all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned backward! Let them be like the grass on the housetops, which withers before it grows up, with which the reaper does not fill his hand nor the binder of sheaves his arms, nor do those who pass by say, “The blessing of the LORD be upon you! We bless you in the name of the LORD!”

I can remember the pain of a sunburned back in my youth after long hours sitting on a tractor and cultivating corn in the hot Iowa sun. And the agony of trying to sleep that night with a sunburned back. That thought, coupled with the futility of growing grass on a rooftop is a very discouraging picture. All this and yet the pilgrim can proclaim, “Yet they have not prevailed against me. How often can we make that claim, “That the Evil One has not prevailed within me”?

Psalm 128:1-6

March 23, 2022

A Song of Ascents. Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways! You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you from Zion! May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life! May you see your children's children! Peace be upon Israel!

An interesting progression of blessings as a result of fearing the LORD. If I will walk in His ways, I will be blessed by:

1) eating the fruit of my labors

2) all will go well with you.

3) your wife will be a Provebrs 31 woman

4) you will have many delightful children

5) you will enjoy the peace of the land.

If that listing is not enjoying the fruit of your hands, I don’t know what it would be.

Psalm 127:1-5

March 22, 2022

A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

The bread of anxious toil. What is that? What are some of the markers? Never taking time to be with the LORD, God, the Almighty for prayer; for meditation; in worship? Never taking the time to sit with the Scriptures and let the Word of the Lord permeate your inner being? Am I too busy with my own worries and cares to sit with a brother and share his load and concerns? What happened to the notion of praying without ceasing?

I read an article this morning in Mercator Net, “South Korea: the world’s worth dearth” by Louis T March.

Dr. March predicts that as a result of it’s disastrously low birth rate, 0.81%, that South Korea will soon cease to continue as an economic force in the world’s economy. The cause, to condense the article into a simple phrase is “anxious toil” Do we see sign of similar problems arising in the USA? Yes, definitely in my life time.

Psalm 126:1-6

March 21, 2022

A Song of Ascents. When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad. Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negeb Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

This seems to start each sentence with an “Alas, all is lost” mentality and wind up with an “Isn’t God good, all the time” paean of joy. I wish I could remember that as I go through various challenges. I, like many others, tend to initially see a challenge as an ‘Alles gewacht’. German for all is lost; just can’t get any worse than this. However, the LORD, God the Almighty, in His Goodness, ALWAYS finishes with His own perfect vision of ‘Gutmotlich’ I’ll leave it to others to puzzle out the definition.

Psalm 119:121-128

March 20, 2022

Ayin I have done what is just and right; do not leave me to my oppressors. Give your servant a pledge of good; let not the insolent oppress me. My eyes long for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise. Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes. I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies! It is time for the LORD to act, for your law has been broken. Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold. Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right; I hate every false way.

What in this day and age is more valuable than fine gold? A little research indicated that rhodium is now the most precious of all metals, primarily because of its role in electronics. But I haven’t been able to verify that. However the point remains is that the Commandments of the LORD, God, the Almighty are far and away above the most valuable of all things. I might consider stating that the LORD’s commandments are far more valuable than refined rhodium.

Psalm 125:1-5

March 19, 2022

A Song of Ascents. Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, from this time forth and forevermore. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, lest the righteous stretch out their hands to do wrong. Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts! But those who turn aside to their crooked ways the LORD will lead away with evildoers! Peace be upon Israel!

Look at the part that “trust” plays in the first sentence and throughout the balance of the Psalm. Right through to that beautiful blessing. Peace be upon Israel. Who is the Psalmist begging for a blessing to be conferred upon? Israel is not only his nation but also his family. The descendants of Jacob through to the modern day Jews who trust in the LORD. And to those of us who have been grafted into the family of believers. How does the hymn go? “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.”

Psalm 124:1-8

March 18, 2022

A Song of Ascents. Of David. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side— let Israel now say— if it had not been the LORD who was on our side when people rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us; then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; then over us would have gone the raging waters.

Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth! We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped! Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Do I ever take the time and the effort to separate all the elements of my life in this fashion? Where and what are the raging waters of my life as a disciple of the LORD? Sometimes it is fellow members of the church who regard worship as a social obligation lasting at most for 45 minutes and timed at the convenience of the Sunday tee time. Sometimes it is a fellow member who demands a rigidity in our worship, refusing to allow the Holy Spirit to move among us to lead our praises.

But in these times of trial, do I remember to turn to my Savior and seek His help? Or do I insist on doing it myself? Probably!

Psalm 123:1-4

March 17, 2022

A Song of Ascents. To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he has mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

The mercy of the Lord, God, the Almighty versus the scorn and contempt of the proud. Enough said? For sure! But the proud insists on making their contempt know and felt. Some may even be members of the “Faithful” who insist on making the rightness of their worship, the proper way of worship. Indeed is this not a works righteousness? Maybe even, a proclamation that their performance before the LORD is far superior to an other's simple faith?

Psalm 122:6-9

March 16, 2022

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! “May they be secure who love you! Peace be within your walls and security within your towers! For my brothers and companions' sake I will say, “Peace be within you!” For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Pray for the peace of … Peace, peace, wonderful peace that flows from the heart of God. I can hear it in the hidden recesses of my mind but not on Google. Anybody else got a hint? But whether I can find the lyrics or not, there is a peace that emanates only from the heart of the LORD, God, the Almighty.

Psalm 130:5-8

March 15, 2022

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

There is an air of certainty that far exceeds the usual emotion associated with ‘hope’. The Psalmist is not using to hope that carries a large sense of ‘would be nice if’ with it. No, he knows for sure, it is a certainty, just not when, but will is a for sure. No, that it will happen at a time when the boon’s value is at a maximum.

Psalm 130:1-4

March 14, 2022

A Song of Ascents. Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.

The gods of this world are an unforgiving lot; ready at the slightest offense to jump on the poor, weak sinner who has managed to irritate one of the self-centered gods of this world. But the LORD, God, the Almighty is a powerful, forgiving God who bends over to pick me up, dust me off, give me encouraging word, and set my feet in a direction that honors Him.

Psalm 119:129-136

March 13, 2022

Pe Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, because I long for your commandments. Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is your way with those who love your name. Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me. Redeem me from man's oppression, that I may keep your precepts. Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes. My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law.

“Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them...My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law” Doesn't this sum up the times. We, who are the called of the LORD, revel in the joy of His Word, while living in a world of God haters. Our only recourse is to live lives that reflect His Glory.
