Psalm 143:5-9

May 05, 2022

I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands. I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah

Answer me quickly, O LORD! My spirit fails! Hide not your face from me, lest I be like those who go down to the pit. Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD! I have fled to you for refuge.

If I remember my study of German, 55 years ago, there is a phrase, alles gewecht, (all is lost, accompanied with hands thrown in the air and with an expression of great dolor). I get the sense that David has reached that point.

But wait, there is help. He has fled to the Holy One for relief, he pleads for mercy; he obviously remembers the times past where relief was quickly available. There is a hint that it came after a night of sleep. Obviously—lesson learned and I need to learn also.

Psalm 143:1-4

May 04, 2022

A Psalm of David. Hear my prayer, O LORD; give ear to my pleas for mercy! In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness! Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you. For the enemy has pursued my soul; he has crushed my life to the ground; he has made me sit in darkness like those long dead. Therefore my spirit faints within me; my heart within me is appalled.

Very interesting for I just received a notice that a discussion group today, will be focusing on the cause of anxiety. This passage nails the cause exactly. Look at the second and third sentences as the two halves of a teeter-totter and the last sentence as a consequence. Anxiety is caused by a failure of faith!

Psalm 142:6-7

May 03, 2022

Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low! Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me! Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name! The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me.

I never expected my chief persecutor to be myself, but as I mature (I am maturing, not aging) it becomes more and more difficult to accept and deal with. The question of maintaining a Christian witness while using a physical system that no longer responds in the expected ways is exceedingly challenging. The biggest challenge and the most unexpected is learning to accept offers of help graciously rather than seeing them as another marker of unexpected maturing. The second is be thankful that the LORD has surrounded me with loving saints who continue to love in spite of my curmudgeonly attitude.

Psalm 23:6

May 02, 2022

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

I felt the call in February, 2021 to write one or more devotionals for each of the 150 Psalms, ostensibly looking for direction from the LORD, regarding His acceptable forms of worship. The first step is almost finished, eight more Psalms to go. However, the next section will be a line to line examination of somewhere around 200 devotionals and be a bit time consuming.

I was mulling all this over very early this morning and felt that the Holy Spirit was emphasizing this line of the 23rd Psalm as a next project while pursuing the search for worship guidance within the Psalms.

Comments appreciated.

Psalm 119:25-32

May 01, 2022

Daleth My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word! When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes! Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law! I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. I cling to your testimonies, O LORD; let me not be put to shame! I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!

“My soul clings to the dust” “My soul melts away for sorrow”, “O, LORD; let me not be put to shame!” Ish Elohim has his problem pegged—it is his desire for evil and that the solution is the hand of the LORD to separate him from his inequities. O, that I would learn equally well that I must cling to His testimonies and run in the way of His Commandments.

Psalm 142:1-5

April 30, 2022

A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer. With my voice I cry out to the LORD; with my voice I plead for mercy to the LORD. I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him. When my spirit faints within me, you know my way! In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me. Look to the right and see: there is none who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for my soul. I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

In some way, some how, some where, each of us walk David’s path. Each of us has the responsibility to tread cautiously with our soul attuned to the Word of God for guidance. Are we alert to the sign’s of the Evil One’s snares or are we anxious to conceal and ignore His warnings?

Psalm 141:5-10

April 29, 2022

Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head; let my head not refuse it. Yet my prayer is continually against their evil deeds. When their judges are thrown over the cliff, then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant. As when one plows and breaks up the earth, so shall our bones be scattered at the mouth of Sheol. But my eyes are toward you, O GOD, my Lord; in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless! Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me and from the snares of evildoers! Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by safely.

Ish Elohim pleads for a proper evaluation guided by the Word of the LORD; an evaluation and guidance which sets me in the direction outlined in the Word. It is a direction towards a deeper understanding of the LORD, God, the Almighty. A direction of knowing the LORD, not simply about Him. A direction which does not leave me defenseless, but fully armed by the Holy Spirit to avoid the traps and snares of evildoers.

Praise the LORD!

Psalm 141:1-4

April 28, 2022

A Psalm of David. O LORD, I call upon you; hasten to me! Give ear to my voice when I call to you! Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice! Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips! Do not let my heart incline to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with men who work iniquity, and let me not eat of their delicacies!

This is an excellent prayer to develop as a set of bookends to frame my day. Use it in the morning to ensure that my approach to and goals for each activity of the day are appropriate. Then, from a learning viewpoint, review each activity for an examination of goals reached and opportunities to improve the next time.

Psalm 140:12-13

April 27, 2022

I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy. Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name; the upright shall dwell in your presence.

There is a lot buried in that “I know” and “Surely,” that is covered by a simple question. “Do I?” Perhaps these are statements of fact for Ish Elohim, but for me they are presumptuous. I do know that I need to spend more time on my knees praying for the afflicted and needy and giving thanks to the name of the LORD.

Psalm 140:8-11

April 26, 2022

Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah

As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them! Let burning coals fall upon them! Let them be cast into fire, into miry pits, no more to rise! Let not the slanderer be established in the land; let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!

It is far more effective to place revenge and justice in the hands of the LORD rather than plotting and implementing it ourselves. But oh, so difficult to allow the LORD to do it in His timing and way. It is a weakness of the human that we treasure the dreams of revenge. A major lesson to be learned to allow the LORD, God, the Almighty to be the LORD, God, the Almighty. We must resist the temptation to give Him suggestions.

April 25, 2022

I say to the LORD, You are my God; give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O LORD! O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle.

Who ever the author of this paean of praise was, attributed to David by unknown editors, it certainly was someone who understood our dependence upon the strength and covering of the Lord, God, the Almighty. We cannot go into any foray with the Evil One without our LORD’s guidance and protection.

Psalm 140:1-5

April 24, 2022

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; preserve me from violent men, who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually. They make their tongue sharp as a serpent's, and under their lips is the venom of asps. Selah

Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have planned to trip up my feet. The arrogant have hidden a trap for me, and with cords they have spread a net; beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah

Here we are in the midst of a conflict between Russia and the Ukraine which could easily escalate into WW-3. Only the LORD, God, the Almighty knows. However, we have this magnificent Psalm to guide and comfort us. We need to dig into this and burn it into our very being.

Eugene Peterson in Answering God, recommends beginning every period of studying the Psalms with an oral reading of Psalms 1 & 2. I am finding it to be a valuable tool for every period of Scriptural study. I think that is an important part of the exercise by clearing my mind of the day’s turmoil.
