Ish Elohim bubbles over with his vows of fealty regarding the Word of the LORD. Every phrase is a declaration of his love for the Word and obedience to It. No idle promises here, no he is d eclaring absolute loyalty, unswerving obedience. I need to adopt the same pattern for my bedtime devotionals.

So I took a short break. Back to the task of examining the LORD, God’s, the Almighty’s Hymn book for clues to His desired for of /worship. Too soon to cave in and quit with two short psalms left writhing on the examining table.

This is the first time I’ve noticed a reference to new song. Very interesting for we often desire to sing the old and tried. Yet the new hymns often have a new and fresh taste that stirs our hearts into new paths of worship. I will try and keep that in mind, especially in looking at the last two in the Psalmody.

The LORD lifts up the humble; he casts the wicked to the ground. Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre! He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth; he makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

“ the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him,” I can interpret “fear” in at least two different ways. 1) The old fashioned way as absolute terror. The LORD, God the Almighty is the ‘God who drove me in the middle of the night to go check on my brother, Joe, who was a much more obedient child than I and, as I read my mother’s stated expressions, much more likely to be called home if the LORD came for His own in the middle of the night. I doubt if Mom ever made such threats, a somewhat more mature adult knows that she loved all her children and never governed through threats. (Sorry about that rambling sentence, but it does convey the sense of juvenile terror that ruled my preteen life.)

However, He is the great I am and as such is to be worshiped appropriately. The words that come to mind are “respect of His authority”. He is in control of all things and therefore, I must respect His authority.

Zayin Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life. The insolent utterly deride me, but I do not turn away from your law. When I think of your rules from of old, I take comfort, O LORD. Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked, who forsake your law. Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning. I remember your name in the night, O LORD, and keep your law. This blessing has fallen to me, that I have kept your precepts.

This stanza helps me fix my attention on a steadfast reliance upon Word of the LORD, God, the Almighty as I seek to apply it to every aspect of my life. There is no part of my life, or those that I am responsible for, that is not covered by this directive. I must serve as the bulwark against frontal attack by the Evil One as well as those whose sneak attacks by his minions serve to divert my attention.

Not just through the efforts of me alone, but through Betty and I as a union of one being before the LORD. That unity that our marriage reflects must govern our life before the world.

It is fascinating to note that the classes of individuals who reap special attention from the LORD are those with a limitation on their abilities to cope with the challenges of life in some way.

I do catch an anomaly in the list in that the ‘righteous’ jump out like a rose in a weed patch. But do they? Romans 3:10 opens that issue: “ None is righteous, no, not one;” And v 23 settles it ” for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

But all is not lost; reread the passage looking for results. Such as freedom restored, sight to the blind.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry.
