Psalm 119:116

July 08, 2012

Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope!

This certainly is a day for Your upholding. I need Your strength to overcome the lack of sleep, I need Your wisdom to overcome the dullness of mind, I need Your words to overcome the stumbling tongue. Help, me, Lord.

Today's readings in the Psalms:

Morning: Psalm 48

Mid-day: 119:116

Evening: Psalm 124

Voices Together is available as an annual daily devotional and can be purchased at the Fellowship Of Ailbe bookstore.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

That last sentence is the key for, I must be willing to give up the little god that has captured my loyalty. I must be willing to flee from it and to confess my complete failure to control it without Your strength. Then and only then, can I rely on Your promise to provide a way of escape. Praise You, my Lord.

Psalm 4:6-8

July 06, 2012

There are many who say, "Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!" You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

This is it, the very crux of the matter. I have that pervasive sense of wellbeing that comes from the certainty that I dwell in safety through Your love and goodness towards me. I am Yours!

Psalm 4:1-3

July 04, 2012

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!  O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah  But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.

Lord, to what extent and where do I love vain words and seek after lies?  Where and how does this separate me from those You have set apart?  How has this condition interfered with communion between us?  I repent, Lord, I repent!  Change my heart, O Lord, make it ever new.

Romans 8:35-39

July 03, 2012

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Kingdom of Man has little regard for the Kingdom of God, in their eyes, something to be despised, ridiculed and persecuted. But we, who live there know differently. It is a kingdom of great beauty and utility. It provides healing for the sick, freedom for the captives and Shalom for all. It is a place near to the Heart of God, a place of peace and rest, near to the Heart of God. A place of safety where nothing can separate me from the Heart of God. Praise You, O, precious Redeemer, for bringing me to that place near to the Heart of God.

Salvation belongs to You—a gift whose ownership can never be relinquished but whose blessing spreads without limit to those who are obedient to You and Your word, to those who love You without reservation. Praise Your Holy Name, my Lord and Master.

July 01, 2012

You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.

You are my hiding place, the place where I can come for protection, for nurturing, for comforting and for equipping for the Work. You are a shield before me in the presence of my attackers, those sly efforts of the Evil One to discourage and dissuade me from the task You have set my hand to.

Your Word is an ever shining light giving me hope for the future and certainty for the present.

But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the LORD, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around.

You are there in my repentance, ready and willing to lift my head so that I can see Your glory and revel in Your presence. You provide the sleep that truly restores and equips, You are the Shield about me. Praise You, my Lord and Master.

You have revealed to me that my main foe, the one who makes me vulnerable to all others is my lack of belief, trust and commitment. Keep reminding me, keep my lack of faith always before me, help me in my unbelief. I repent of my unbelief and seek restoration. Help me, my Lord.

What is it to be more than a conqueror? A conqueror rules, but a shepherd loves, nurtures and guards. I am equipped with the whole armor of God for this task—now get to it!
