O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds. I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD. I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people, In the courts of the LORD'S house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.

What a fitting conclusion to this Psalm of praise and transformation. The Psalmist throws himself at the feet of LORD, confessing fealty in all things. One of the vows is that he will call upon the name of the LORD. As I looked at that phrase, it occurred to me that this is a promise to take all my troubles, all my woes, all my needs, all my desires, all my joys, all my … In other words, to take positive steps to make the LORD, God, the Almighty the center of my life. A long ways to go.

I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted: I said in my haste, All men are liars. What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD. I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people. Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

There is a transformation hidden in these six sentences. From “all men are liars” to “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints”. That is not a simple white washing, it is truly the transformation by the Blood of the Lamb.

The taking of the cup of salvation, the calling upon the Name of the LORD, and the public paying of vows is both the evidence and the activation thereof.

Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me. Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

I wonder if this is a pattern in other Psalms that just jumped out at me. The pattern that I’m seeing here is a sentence extolling the greatness of God followed by several sentences extolling various manifestations of His glories. The concluding sentence is a statement of the result upon the Psalmist.

If my supposition is correct, it provides a vital clue to the appropriate structure of my prayers.

MEM. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

As I dig into the Law of the LORD, God, the Almighty, I find that I am growing in love for the Word. It is both a sense of appreciation for its cohesiveness and an acknowledgment that it brings rightness into all creation. To do so requires action and participation on my part: meditation, obedience, self-direction, willingness to learn, a searching for understanding and a careful seeking to separate truth from falsehood.

Guide me in this search, O Lord.

I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.

“Then” I called upon the name of the LORD. Not much has changed over the centuries since this Psalm was written. Don’t I still wait until the “pains of hell” have gotten hold of me? Or until I’ve found trouble and sorrow? Yup, “I can do it myself” is firmly ingrained on my heart. And I have been proven to be wrong countless times.

O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron. He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great. The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children. Ye are blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth. The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men. The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.

We start with a very interesting relationship. That is the relationship between fear of the  LORD and our trust in Him. Or digging a little deeper, if I claim to fear the LORD, it will be revealed by trusting Him in ALL THINGS. And the fear/trust relationship will be demonstrated by His blessings of me as I live a life of trust in Him in all things.

Sometimes, deo volente, is a throwaway, almost serving as a vocal period. Do I need to spend less time blithering about what great things I will accomplish “if the LORD wills” and more time doing what I believe to be the LORD’s willing. He will let me know if I’m wrong.

Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake. Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.

Some things never change. Who are the gods of today? Are they not those who pontificate on the nightly news or interview shows, spewing their opinions that are based on twisted logic and a hatred for the LORD, God, the Almighty.

They have mouths but do not think: eyes but vision that warps reality: ears that hear only din and clamor: and so forth. But the worst is that everyone who trusts in them, is just like them.

When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language; Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion. The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back. The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.

What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back? Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs? Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob; Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.

Strange yet appropriate similes. Can you comprehend the mountains skipping like rams? The little hills frolicking like lambs? The sea fleeing? The Jordan flowing upstream? A powerful force indeed! Nothing but the power of the presence of the God of Jacob that has the power to turn rock into standing water and flint into a fountain.

What a sight that will be. Truly worthy of “Awesome.”

The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth! He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people. He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.

This addresses a very interesting aspect of our LORD; His humility. Who would think that the One who said… and it was, would be considered from the aspect of His humility.  As I think about it, this is another precursor of the humility of the One who said He came to serve, not to be served. That one who was able to say, It is finished! And it was! All because His humility enabled Him to take my sins as His own.

Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD'S name is to be praised.

It seems to me that the praise of the LORD, God, the Almighty has to be continuously on my lips and ever present in my mind. Well? Duh? So what’s the problem, dummy?

Precisely that! “Dummy” Or “self-centered” Or ….. the list goes on with the ways in which Satan has marred the apex of the LORD’s creation. We, mankind, are the only part of His creation which is made it His image. Genesis 1:26-27, “ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Male and female. The only object of the creation! And we fell for the trap. Genesis 3 has to be one of the saddest chapters in the Bible. But yet, another view puts it at the beginning of the LORD, God, the Almighty’s plan for His ultimate glorification. Hallelujah, He is risen.

LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.

Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction. I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me. I am thine, save me; for I have sought thy precepts. The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies. I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad.

Ish Elohim finds great delight and solace in the constancy of the LORD, God, the Almighty. Look at that, the opening phrase is “For ever” and there is no doubt in my mind that he understood the power of those two little words.

Then he segues from the permanence of thee Word of the LORD to his dependency upon them. He recognizes them as his very foundation of life within the Precepts of the Word, and his bulwark against the onslaughts of the wicked. Is there bit of a twinkle in his eye as he points out that perfection may come to and end, but the LORD’s commandments exceed that perfection.

A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies. He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour. The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

Flip back to yesterday’s Voices Together. That segment of the 112th and this are the focus upon the attitude of the one who follows the LORD in all his life. The Psalmist is examining all the factors which evidence the Hand of the LORD, God, the Almighty upon a faithful individual and finds significant reshaping of a human life. Look at some of those simple phrases, “he will guide his affairs with discretion.” The word that strikes my eye is ‘discretion,’ How often does the urge for a juicy tidbit of gossip seeks to worm its way into my conversation. No, no, a thousand time no. This is not discretion.
