Psalm 109:6-13

December 17, 2011

Psalm 109:6-13

Appoint a wicked man against him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him come forth guilty; let his prayer be counted as sin! May his days be few; may another take his office! May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow! May his children wander about and beg, seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit! May the creditor seize all that he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil! Let there be none to extend kindness to him, nor any to pity his fatherless children! May his posterity be cut off; may his name be blotted out in the second generation!

You went to the Cross because of false accusers and died for their sins and mine. How can I complain that I have a couple of individuals who are making false statements that are merely a miasma in the breeze?

Lord, open their hearts to You, bring the knowledge of Your love, grace and mercy to them that they may be healed of their anger and filled instead with Your peace. Bless them, Lord.

Psalm 109:1-5

December 16, 2011

Psalm 109:1-5

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Be not silent, O God of my praise! For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues. They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer. So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

It is only You, Lord, that stands between Betty and I and the lying tongues of our ward and her family. Our only defense is prayer of thanksgiving and praise, bringing our needs before You and trusting in the peace that passes all understanding. (Ps 149:6, Phil. 4:4ff)

Hebrews 12:3-13

December 15, 2011

Hebrews 12:3-13

Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.

Lord, open my eyes to see the discipline You bring to me. Help me to see it as Your hand of love and correction rather than some hurdle to be railed against and some challenge to be overcome. I need to become wait-full rather than resource-full.

Psalm 108:10-13

December 14, 2011

Psalm 108:10-13

Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go out, O God, with our armies. Oh grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes.

Renewal! Revival! Reawakening! Regeneration! Restoration! Rebirth! Reconciliation! Your Church needs, desperately needs to be transformed from assimilation of the culture to adherence to the Word. We are at a crossroads where we can continue to participate in the complete marginalization of the faith or we can gird our loins, turning to You to guide us out of the land of Egypt.

Inflame our hearts for You, Lord.

Psalm 108:7-9

December 13, 2011

Psalm 108:7-9

God has promised in his holiness: "With exultation I will divide up Shechem and portion out the Valley of Succoth. Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my scepter. Moab is my washbasin; upon Edom I cast my shoe; over Philistia I shout in triumph."

LORD God, the Almighty, You have declared that all the nations of the world are subject to You and Your Law. You have said, “They are mine, I will be honored by them.” You have chosen me as one of Your messengers of the Good News. Place Your words in my mouth and anoint them for Your purpose.

Psalm 108:1-6

December 12, 2011

Psalm 108:1-6

A Song. A Psalm of David. My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your steadfast love is great above the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth! That your beloved ones may be delivered, give salvation by your right hand and answer me!

Be exalted, O LORD, above the heavens. Let Your glory shine over all the earth. What a glorious day when Your glory is evident to all; when all will fall to their knees and acknowledge You as Lord and Master. Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

While I am waiting for that Day, let it be the song of my mouth, the testimony of my countenance, and the work of my hands, to proclaim Your glory.

December 11, 2011

Psalm 119:76-77

Let your steadfast love comfort me according to your promise to your servant. Let your mercy come to me, that I may live; for your law is my delight.

Your steadfast love comforts me, Your mercy comes to me; what response can I give except to say that Your law is my delight? You gave Your all, Your life, You endured the cross, and all You ask is I prove my love and gratitude by being obedient to Your commandments. Yes, Lord, Yes, Lord, Yes, Yes Lord.

1 Corinthians 9:16-23

December 10, 2011

1 Corinthians 9:16-23

For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship. What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

Lord, to live and preach the gospel to all people, what a blessing that would be. My whole life, every aspect of it, a testimony to Your grace, love and mercy. Every word intended to draw people to you; to lift You up and glorify You. Every action a demonstration of Your love and mercy.

Help me, Lord.

Psalm 107:33-43

December 09, 2011

Psalm 107:33-43

He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.

How will You bring Your peace to those young people who are trapped in the deserts of drugs and alcohol, licentiousness, self-will, and sloth? They are discouraged and depressed by the failure of their gods to provide hope and relief. When will You speak into their despondency? How will You use Betty and I to be Your messengers of Good News?

Psalm 107:23-32

December 08, 2011

Psalm 107:23-32

Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits' end. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

Lord, You in Your mercy, still the waves of the storm of sinfulness caused by my self-will. You bring Shalom to turmoil and joy to remove anxiety. You pour the Oil of Gladness upon my fears and worries; You restore my soul and my cup runneth over. You are, indeed, the Good Shepherd, the Shepherd who watches over His flock.

Psalm 107:17-22

December 07, 2011

Psalm 107:17-22

Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

Lord, are there still sins in my life that I treasure? Are there hidden idols that I turn to in times of trouble? Are there elements of self concealed by a facade of holiness?

Expose them to the cleansing light of Your Word, cauterize them by the fire of the Spirit, excise them and heal me according to Your mighty power and love.

Psalm 107:10-16

December 06, 2011

Psalm 107:10-16

Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.

Praise You, Lord, thank You, my Savior for You have lifted me out of darkness and the shadow of death, You have burst my bonds and brought me out into Your glorious presence. Life in the Kingdom is now my right and inheritance.

Lord, I pray for the same gift for family, friends and neighbors. I pray that Your power and love will use me to carry the message of hope to all.
