Psalm 36:1-4

February 25, 2013

To the choirmaster. Of David, the servant of the LORD. Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes. For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated. The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit; he has ceased to act wisely and do good. He plots trouble while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not reject evil.

Ah, Lord, how easy it is to convince myself that I am smarter than You, that I can transgress and offend You, but You won't notice, You won't really be concerned, that You are to busy with the big stuff to pay attention to my little peccadilloes. I am wrong!

I am one of those "all things" that is under your purview and care, I am one of Your sheep, I am one who has sworn fealty to You, I am one for whom You gave Your all, I must adhere to Your Word and follow You in every aspect of my life.

You are Lord and Master of my life.

February 24, 2013

When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes!

Confession, Lord, confession. Where it all starts as I confessed my sins before You and repented of my wicked ways. Then You answered; then I heard the gentle voice saying, "Welcome, my son, let me bring you into the Kingdom." And the process began to instill Your word in my heart.

Galatians 5:18

February 23, 2013

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

I understand, Lord, that this is not that dangerous adage, "I'm under grace, not the Law" but is an instruction for me to always seek the things of the Spirit as my way of life. You are directing me to fill my mind and heart with Your Word, to seek to live in a way that honors and glorifies You, to let my mouth to be filled with Your praises, to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, giving thanks in all circumstances. Then my life will be one that displays the fruit of the Spirit as outlined in subsequent verses. Thank You, Lord, for the gift of the Comforter.

Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, "Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of his servant!" Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long.

Lord, You do delight in my welfare, in those gifts of peace, righteousness and joy in the Holy Spirit that You bestow upon your obedient children. Let my tongue sing today of Your great love for me.

Psalm 35:26

February 21, 2013

Let them be put to shame and disappointed altogether who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me!

There are those who rejoice when one of Yours is faced with calamity, sickness or misbehavior. Lord, that I am able to stand firm, acknowledging whatever part I played in creating the situation and repenting where necessary.

Psalm 35:22-25

February 20, 2013

You have seen, O LORD; be not silent! O Lord, be not far from me! Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication, for my cause, my God and my Lord! Vindicate me, O LORD, my God, according to your righteousness, and let them not rejoice over me! Let them not say in their hearts, "Aha, our heart's desire!" Let them not say, "We have swallowed him up."

Lord, keep me on the King's Highway, walking resolutely and progressing according to Your will. Keep my mind, hands, heart, eyes, all focused on You, that my every action and word will declare Your Glory. Help me, Lord.

Psalm 35:19-21

February 19, 2013

Let not those rejoice over me who are wrongfully my foes, and let not those wink the eye who hate me without cause. For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they devise words of deceit. They open wide their mouths against me; they say, "Aha, Aha! Our eyes have seen it!"

Satan has devised many snares and traps for me, he plots to destroy my witness, to discredit my ministry and to discourage me in my walk as one of Your servants. It is only through You, my Lord, my Redeemer, that I am kept from harm. Preserve me, Lord, protect me from harm.

February 18, 2013

How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions! I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you.

Now is the time, Lord, to release me from those compulsions that drive my life. Heal me from the sin of pride and self-will. Bring me to my knees before You in repentance and contrition. Then I can praise You in the congregations of the saints for Your great mercy,

Psalm 119:21

February 17, 2013

Psalm 119:21

You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from your commandments.

This seems to apply to my brother, Lord, who does not quite get it. I keep hearing those words, "I will never drink again!," "I will never do drugs again!," "I will never smoke again!," "I will never ....!" Where is the "Through the strength of the Lord, "I will never ..." Where is the calling upon You? Where is that broken and contrite heart that You treasure? Where is that joy of the Presence?

Bring him home to You, Lord, bring him home. Lord, as I publish this 5 years and 13 days after it was written, my brother is back in prison and I have lost count of the number of times through the revolving door. Out and in and out and in and … Lord, bring him to his knees before You.

Today's readings in the Psalms:

Mid-day: 119:113-120

Psalm 35:15-16

February 16, 2013

But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered; they gathered together against me; wretches whom I did not know tore at me without ceasing; like profane mockers at a feast, they gnash at me with their teeth.

O how the world delights in watching one of Yours stumble and trip over some element of sin. Yes, when I am the one who has disgraced You Holy Name, I must fall to my knees in repentance filled with grief for the shame I have brought upon Your Name. I must fix my eyes upon the Cross that redeemed me and not allow the profaners to distract me from my return to communion with You.

Psalm 35:12-14

February 15, 2013

They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft. But I, when they were sick-- I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest. I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; as one who laments his mother, I bowed down in mourning.

You call me to love my enemies, to serve them and to lift them up in prayer. I must strictly resist the temptation to rejoice when they are beset with troubles and woes but I am to grieve with them, comfort and console.

Today's readings in the Psalms:

Morning: Psalm 122

Mid-day: 119:97-104

Psalm 35:9-11

February 14, 2013

Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his salvation. All my bones shall say, "O LORD, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?" Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I do not know.

Who is like You, Lord? Who is there to stand between me and the assaults of the Evil One? Who provides the guidance from temptation and says, "I am with you to the very end of the age."? There is none like You. No one! You are my strength and my shield, in You will I trust.
