Psalm 78:21-25

January 28, 2014

Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel, because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power. Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven, and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance.

Even today You do not completely withdraw Your favor from a disobedient and rebellious Church. We catch glimmers of glory that make us long for more but we lack the conviction to seek Your presence in every aspect of our lives.

Psalm 78:17-20

January 27, 2014

Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved. They spoke against God, saying, "Can God spread a table in the wilderness? He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?"

Yes, we demand a prosperity gospel, we want to live with all the toys and accouterments of the materialistic culture around us. Never satisfied, always coveting the temporal and unable to fasten our eyes on the eternal.

Psalm 78:12-16

January 25, 2014

In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan. He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap. In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light. He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep. He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

As you stood between Israel and the Egyptian hordes, as you slaked their thirst and provided for them in the wilderness, so the Son has opened a passage for the Church through the Sea of Sin and Temptation, standing between us and the myriads of the Evil One. You have provided the Living Water that slakes our thirst for the pleasures of this world permanently.

Psalm 78:9-11

January 24, 2014

The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle. They did not keep God's covenant, but refused to walk according to his law. They forgot his works and the wonders that he had shown them.

How often has the Church backed away from a battle, caving in and using a pretext of love and peace or a deliberate misinterpretation of the Lord's words to judge not to avoid confrontation? We seek to assimilate rather than confront.

Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned against you and disobeyed Your Word. Discipline Your Church, return us to our first love.

Psalm 78:5-8

January 23, 2014

He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

We must teach the next generation that the Law of God is a blueprint for life in the Kingdom of God in the here and now. They must know and understand that the kingdom is available to them now and not some form of ethereal pie in the sky.

Psalm 78:1-4

January 22, 2014

A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

O, the stories and testimonies from that great cloud of witnesses that has gone before. (Heb 22:1). We must not hide them from the next generation; we must shout the evidence of Hie glory and might and wonders from the housetops and in the marketplaces.

Hebrews 6:1-8

January 21, 2014

Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits. For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.

This should be a frightening passage for the Western churches. We have tasted the goodness and the power and then fallen away; introduced our ideas of appropriate worship and obedience; bent the Word to accommodate our pride and self-will; even created our personal pantheons to house the gods we have fashioned. And then we curse God for not answering our prayers. The LORD God Almighty is very explicit about this behavior from His people. (Prov. 28:9)

Psalm 77:16-20

January 20, 2014

When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled. The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side. The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook. Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

I know, that even if unseen by temporal eyes, You lead me through the raging seas of doubt and fear. If You led Israel through the Red Sea with the hordes of Egypt hot on their heals, how much more can I expect as relief from the torments of the Evil One.

Psalm 119:42

January 19, 2014

Then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word.

Your steadfast love, O Lord, Your steadfast love washes over me and covers me. It is not only a shield against the taunts of those who despise You, it guides me into powerful and effective answers in word and deed that prove the power of Your steadfast love. Praise You, my Lord and master.

Psalm 77:10-15

January 18, 2014

Then I said, "I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High." I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

Yes, this is the time that the great cloud of witness step forward to remind me of the wonders of old. It becomes a time when I can meditate on Your mighty deeds, consider the wonders that You have worked and know that You are truly a God of Redemption.

Psalm 77:7-9

January 17, 2014

"Will the Lord spurn forever, and never again be favorable? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?" Selah

Yew, Lord, there are times when I wonder if You have withdrawn your favor. Have I finally offended You? Yes, I know that You will never leave me nor forsake me, but????? Satan is quick to say, “You did it this time.”
